Found the real blocker before the team built the wrong AI platform
Showed the real issue in the acquisition pipeline before a premature platform build.
- Months: Of unnecessary engineering avoided
- 1 blocker: Found, instead of building a platform
Before
A founder was planning to build an AI platform to automate sourcing, screening, and outreach for acquisitions. A multi-month engineering build was about to start, with no clear sense of which step in the process was actually slowing deals down.
The hard part
Was this a repeating process worth building a platform for, or a one-off acquisition where a whole platform would be overkill? Talking it through, the founder realised this was likely a single deal, not something that would recur often enough to justify an end-to-end system.
What got decided
Mapping the whole process end to end showed where the real hold-up was, and reframed the work:
- Fix the one blocker rather than build a platform
- This may not be worth building for at all, a harder call the founder reached himself through the mapping
Result
Months of unnecessary engineering avoided, with clear next steps in their place. The founder also walked away with a simple way to judge build-versus-fix decisions on future acquisitions.
The most valuable outcome of planning can be the decision not to build. When the instinct is to build a platform, mapping the real hold-up often shows the platform isn’t justified.
